2012 Jewish Educator Award Winner Lidia Turner Plants Seeds of Jewish Learning in Students’ Minds

Milken Community High School
Los Angeles, CA

As BJE Executive Director Dr. Gil Graff told students at the surprise Jewish Educator Awards (JEA) assembly, Milken Community High School “is a school of values and of commitment… to thinking about how we can lead our lives and how we can make a difference.” Teachers like JEA recipient Lidia Turner help make that happen. When Uruguay-born Turner first came to the U.S., she worked in architecture but soon turned full time to her first love — instilling in young people “the importance of being an educated link in the chain of Jewish generations.” At the Saperstein Middle School of Milken Community High, Mrs. Turner teaches Hebrew and coordinates the Nofim Israel Education Program. Accepting the award, Mrs. Turner said, “We are planting seeds, not me, but all of us… all of the teachers that are willing to do this precious job are doing something important.”
